Two Exemplar Research Initatives
Renaissance Knowledge Network (ReKN)
When I joined the Electronic Textual Cultures Lab (ETCL) in November 2014, I was brought on as a Graduate Research Assistant for the Renaissance Knowledge Network (ReKN). As described on the ETCL Projects Page, ReKN…

is a major initiative to create an integrated online research environment tailored to the needs of scholars studying the Renaissance. ReKN is situated within Iter, a not-for-profit partnership dedicated to the advancement of learning in the study and teaching of the Middle Ages and Renaissance (400-1700) through the development and distribution of online resources. Integrating three usually discrete activities vital to scholarly work – research, analysis, and production – will allow ReKN to address the growing challenges of diverse, isolated, and siloed digital resources, a bewildering number of tools and platforms devoted to textual analysis, and the increasing number of ways scholarship is produced and disseminated in particular research communities. This initiative is in development and led by the ETCL team in collaboration with Iter and the Advanced Research Consortium.

My work on the project has mostly consisted of developing an extensive bibliography and field directories focused publications and projects at the intersection of Early Modern/Renaissance studies and Digital Humanities. I developed an annotation theory and taxonomy for the project, and composed the individual annotations for each resource. The bibliography has become the public-facing resource for the ReKN. It demonstrates the objectives of the projects, points to important areas of research in the field, and gestures towards future research directions. Social Knowledge Creation Bibliography
In the fall of 2016, the ETCL Graduate Research Assistants collaborated to revise a extensive bibliography on social knowledge creation in the humanities. Originally developed in 2012-2013 and published in 2014, the first version was conceived as a compilation of three, separate, annotated bibliographies. Now revisited and renewed, the Social Knowledge Creation Bibliography knits the disparate documents together, broadens the contextual scope, and adds notable subject additions, including public humanities, crowdsourcing, digital publishing, and open access.

Our team defined social knowledge creation as: acts of collaboration in order to engage in or produce shared cultural data and / or knowledge products

Not only does our team engage with theories and examples of social knowledge creation throughout the entirety of the document, but we also purposefully practiced social knowledge creation values by collaborating on the intellectual direction of the new iteration, by working together in collecting resources, and by writing cooperatively using  electronic authoring platforms, like Google Drive.

The bibliography is currently under review at the New Technologies in Medieval and Renaissance Studies journal.
